ISO15118 Plug&Charge deploys several cryptographic mechanisms to secure communication and guarantee the confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity of all exchanged data. The Plug & Charge feature enables the EV to automatically identify itself to the charging station and get authorized access to the energy it needs to recharge its battery. This is all based on the digital certificates and public-key infrastructures made available through the Plug & Charge feature. The EV driver doesn’t need to do anything except plug the charging cable into the vehicle and the charging station. Using a credit card, opening an app to scan a QR code, or finding an RFID card is a thing of the past with this technology. The process leverages encryption techniques and secure protocols to ensure transaction security, and this is why the ISO15118 Plug&Charge technology greatly simplifies the EV charging experience.
A quick view of how Plug&Charge works to make EV charging simple:
When the EV driver plugs the vehicle into the charge point, the EV identifies itself to the charging station, allowing for instant authorization and the initiation of charging. The communication includes data on the driver’s account with the EV charging service provider, which ensures that the electricity used for charging will be billed automatically.
To make the Plug&Charge experience happen, all roles in the EV charging ecosystem must support ISO 15118, which enables secure and scalable communications for EV charging. These roles include EV and charger manufacturers, charge point operators (CPOs) and electric mobility service providers (EMSPs) that deliver public EV charging services, and backend software providers whose platforms manage EV charging networks, energy use, and business functions such as driver accounts, billing, and roaming reconciliation.
Plug & Charge allows for seamless roaming and delivers a true “charge anywhere” experience for drivers. Using Plug & Charge secured authentication, EV drivers can charge on the road, across regions and borders, and on any eMobility service provider’s EV charging network. This capability is enabled once the EV driver pairs the EV’s unique identifier (PCID) with the EV charging app.
