An electric car with a battery will create DC fault currents, these are fault currents that can put the usual earth-fault protection out of play. To avoid dangerous situations, there are two different solutions.
One is to install an earth fault protection which called Type-B RCCB that can handle the special fault currents. However, this is a solution that is both expensive and requires a lot of space in the fuse box.
The other way to go is to use so-called DC monitoring. Then there is a safety unit in the charging station that makes sure to switch off the charging if scary fault currents occur. This is a much more cost-effective and elegant solution that does not require special protection in the fuse box.
Therefore, it is very important for users to choose a safe charging station with DC monitoring.
